The Sounds of Namibia

So back about a week ago or so, I visited BaseFm which is a local radio station in located in Katutura, a local township in Namibia. They broadcast in the Khomas region of Namibia with their main audience between the ages of 18 and 35. They have many different DJ's and talk show hosts who have daily programs featuring the latest popular music as well as local news stories. After taking a tour of the studio and talking to some of the people who work there I found that BaseFM is a really cool and down to earth radio station with people who really love what they do! I talked to them about some popular Namibian music and found some cool artists that are pretty well known here. They also said they play lots of American popular music as well as mixes from other African countries. If you want to learn more about BaseFM, check out their website: http://www.basefm.com.na/index.php

Below are some of the more popular artists they mentioned so I went to check out their music! Lots draw on influences from traditional African music, reggaeton, hip hop, and dancehall so check out the videos below and enjoy!

                                                                     The Dogg- Forget
The Dogg is a popular Namibian artist who plays a lot on the radio and in clubs. This song has a beautiful video showing some of the places around Namibia that people live in. The ultimate message, I think, is to never forget where you come from and he has lots of pride in Namibia!

                                                                     Gazza- Shukusha
Gazza is a really popular Namibian artist who you will hear when you go to many bars and clubs around the country. This video reminds me a lot more of some American rap and hip hop artists and beware, there are some adult images and lots of booty shaking (sorry Mom!)

Shishani- Windhoek
Shishani is personally more my style of music and the video above is a great song about the city I am calling home at the moment. The video has lots of wonderful scenes from the city so check it out and get more of an idea of the place I am living. She also said she based this song off of Alicia Keys and Jay Z's "Empire State of Mind" which is very noticeable. Windhoek is such a wonderful little city with so much diversity and lots to explore and offer. Hope you enjoy! :)

These are just some of the many musicians Namibia has to offer. They also are all apart of the more popular genre. I am on the lookout for more music that isn't as popular and also some traditional music and will share them all with you! Thanks for reading!
